When you enter the world of essential oils, it is easy to get lost as there are hundreds to choose from. It is easy to get overwhelmed at first.
If you are anything like me,
you’ve compiled a collection of essential oils - but you don’t know how to use
most of them without sniffing occasionally to relieve headaches or get an
instant energy boost. Before we get into the use of essential oils, we will
start with the basics.
What are essential oils?
Let's break the word down, shall
we? First, the “essential” part is a little misleading. While some users find
essential oil as a very important part of their routine, the term refers not to
the value of the product, but to the taking of plant’s “essence” by condensing,
well, quite a lot of said plant.
Essential oils are extracted from
plants to retain their aroma and flavor, along with their useful properties. Each
essential oil has unique ingredients that give it a characteristic essence.
And while they may feel oily when
touched, essential oils are not exactly
an oil, as their composition differs greatly from animal and vegetable
oils. In other words, instead of being made up mainly of fatty acids, the
composition of essential oil cells depends on the plant from which it
originated - usually extracted by steam distillation. The extracted materials
are too strong to be used alone, so they are then mixed with the carrier oil before being topically
applied on the body or used in oil diffusers.
How to use essential oils:
To learn more about your use of
essential oils, you need to understand a few things right from the start.
Usually, oils are used in one of three ways. This essential oil using list will
help you become a pro faster!
- Aromatically
- Topically
- Internally
How to use essential oils Aromatically:
The most common way is to use
essential oils via aromatherapy, thanks to the satisfying smell of most
essential oils. This use of essential oils may be very common. Maybe you
wandered around the spa and enjoyed the scent of Eucalyptus oil and Tea Tree or
maybe you felt the gentle calmness of Lavender scent on one of your favorite
products at home. Now you can learn how to get the benefits of essential oils
by spreading their scent!
Try this combination in your
diffuser before bedtime to promote rest and relaxation:
- 4 drops Lavender
- 3 drops Cedarwood
- 2 drops Frankincense
Even if you do not have a
diffuser, you can still enjoy the many fragrant benefits of essential oils.
Apply drops of your favorite oil to a cotton ball and place them in areas
where you want to spread the scent. You will be amazed at how effective this simple solution is!
Start a fragrant space in minutes
by adding a few drops of your favorite citrus oils to a cotton ball, and place
it in a workout or gym bag, trash can, or another area that needs to be
enhanced by the scent.
The easiest way to get the
benefits of aromatic oils is to take a few drops from a bottle and place them
in the palm of your hand. Inhale, breathing heavily for as long as necessary -
but, you know, take it easy so you don't hold your breath or anything.
How to use essential oils Topically:
The topical use of essential oils is
one of the most popular. Once you get the hang of this application, it will be
one of your favorites! Often, finding out how to apply essential oils to the
skin is what makes most people use regular oil and become dedicated.
- Essential oils can be applied to your scalp, ears, neck, and temples. If the smell of the oil is very strong, or your skin is sensitive, you can reduce it with a carrier oil.
- Essential oils are best used in massages! For a soothing effect, Lavender and Cedarwood essential oils can be added to carrier oil.
- By rejuvenating the muscles after a long workout, get the cooling effect of Peppermint's essential menthol in a sports massage.
- Use essential oils "slightly by mixing a few drops with your ointment, or mixing an essential oil such as almond, olive or coconut oil."
- You can also add a few drops to your bath "to get hard access to areas like your back”.
In addition, there are few essential oils that should not be used topically before going in sunlight, such as bergamot or any citrus oils, as they can cause a phototoxic reaction when your skin is exposed to the sun.
How to use essential oils Internally:
Essential oils should not be taken internally unless under medical
supervision. If you still wish to combine these in your daily routines, first
check with your medical practitioner and then use them.
- Adding a drop or two of your favorite essential oil to the water throughout the day is a great way to stay hydrated. Oils such as Lemon, Grapefruit, and Orange provide a delicious flavor in an area without calorie soda or juice. Other oils like Peppermint and Thieves Vitality provide a spicy kick throughout your day.
- Do you like home-made ice cream? Add a sophisticated twist with Lavender Vitality to your Blueberry-Lavender Ice Cream.

Essential oil safety
Essential oils are very potent,
so you have to be cautious when you use them:
- Less is more! You can always add some drops, so start small, whether you use your oil by topically, aromatically, or internally.
- Due to its strength, some oils may irritate the skin. If irritation occurs, immediately apply Vegetable Oil to the affected area to reduce it.
- Always read label labels for each oil before use.
- Do not apply essential oils to the eyes, ears, nose, or other sensitive areas of the skin.
- Always dilute essential oils with a carrier oil before applying on skin
- Do a patch test before applying on larger areas
- Keep essential oils out of reach of children and pets
